Buntingford Vets v Therfield Vets Buntingford Won 9-4
A hat trick for Simon Blazey...
 |
A 13 goal thriller was played out this week between The Vets and a rather 'youthful' Therfield Team. Buntingford arrived with probably their biggest squad of the season with 15 players turning up and another two being persuaded they would be better off helping out with their sons 'Cougars' Team otherwise there would have been 17 players to choose from (and probably not enough shirts to go round)! Buntingford took an early lead with a great run from the halfway line by Lee Grinyer who decided to wait until the Therfield goalkeeper was on top of him before shooting, which led to a collision between the two of them and the ball left trickling towards the goal; fortunately, there was just enough on it to cross the line. A sloppy period of play then saw Therfield score two quick goals to go 2-1 up before last week's hat-trick hero, Simon Blazey, rose to meet a fine Mark Ward corner to level it up at 2-2; the score remained level until half time. Town started the second half strongly and deservedly their patience and passing was beginning to open up the Therfield defence. ...and one for James Neill! |
A flurry of goals then came along (not sure in which what order they were scored) with Blazey scoring another 2 to make it his second hat-trick on the trot. Further goals came via a Nick Savage header, a back flick from Bobby White and finally, top scorer, James Neill, joined in the fun and bagged his own treble. However, the easiest chance fell to the 'goalless this season' Neill Radwell, who only needed to hit the target when the ball fell perfectly for him smack bang in the middle of the goal, only for him to blast it over the bar and into the farmers field some 40 yards behind the pitch! Therfield did score a couple in the second half but these were merely consolation goals and Buntingford never looked in any real danger throughout the second half. The whole squad of 15 really played their part in this excellent victory with every player getting at least 45 minutes on the pitch and slotting into their various positions perfectly. It truly was a team performance. It’s a shame we have a weeks break (for Easter) but lets hope we carry on where we left off with another strong squad, with all players eager to play for each other again and who knows, Simon Blazey could make it a hat-trick of hat-tricks (and a hat trick of jugs in the bar afterwards)! Squad: Alan Kinnear, Gary Cropper, Chris Thurgill, Robin Clark, Richard Morris, Pete Ware, Chris Englishby, Neill Radwell, Bobby White, Nick Savage, Simon Blazey, Mark Ward, Lee Grinyer, Dan Savage, James Neill.
